In the Catholic tradition, Litanies are repeated, chanted invocations of requests addressed to God, the Virgin Mary or the Saints. This type of prayer has been used by the Jewish people since ancient times. Saint Paul, in his letter to Timothy, recommends liturgical prayer in the form of “supplications”.
Litany prayers can be found in the earliest customs of the Church, which used them in public processions, for example, to ask for the cessation of a plague or to thank Heaven for a miraculous intervention.
Litanies are highly recommended for times of calamity. So often in the history of the world, Litanies have obtained miraculous assistance from God.
Litanies are also part of some of the Church’s solemn liturgical ceremonies. The “Litanies of the Saints” are sung at Easter Vigils, baptismal ceremonies, priestly and episcopal ordinations, and All Saints’ Day.
