A Novena is a series of prayers offered for nine consecutive days.
It is a good idea to accompany these prayers with sacrifices or special virtue practices, to give them added weight.
Where does this Christian tradition come from?
Just before ascending to Heaven on the day of His glorious Ascension, Jesus Christ instructed His disciples to remain united in prayer in the Upper Room, until the coming of the Holy Spirit. These nine days, spent in intense prayer under the motherly inspiration of the Blessed Virgin Mary, formed the basis of the first novena.
A Novena is made:
When the desired favour is urgent, an accelerated novena can be made by reciting the prayers every hour for nine consecutive hours.
