Litany of
the Suffering Jesus

Our Divine Saviour wished to give us an example of perfect resignation, the most loving kind, amid the sufferings that visit all men. Jesus Christ is the pre-eminent Man of Sorrows. His Divine Mother Mary, Virgin without stain, also drank the cup of sorrow to the dregs; let us therefore come and stand with Her at the foot of the Cross of Jesus in agony, and honor these mysteries of ignominy and suffering which must sanctify us and show us the only way to eternal happiness.

  • O Jesus, slandered and unjustly judged,
  • O Jesus, treated as a madman and a fool,
  • O Jesus, scourged and covered in blood,
  • O Jesus, condemned to death as a criminal and a lawbreaker,
  • O Jesus, compared to an infamous bandit,
  • O Jesus, crowned with thorns and hailed with derision,
  • O Jesus, burdened with the anathemas and curses of all the people,
  • O Jesus, led to Calvary carrying the burden of the Cross,
  • O Jesus, nailed to the Cross and offered as a spectacle to the whole world,
  • O Jesus, steeped with bitterness and gall in the ardor of Thy thirst,
  • O Jesus, expiring at last in the arms of the Cross,
  • O Jesus, whose Heart was pierced by a lance,
  • O Jesus, voluntary victim for all our sins,
  • O Jesus, model and support in all our sorrows,

Let Us Pray. – O Jesus, who for my sake and in atonement of my sins, suffered boundless sorrows, humiliations and opprobrium, imprint them with a profound esteem in my mind, engrave their sentiments in my heart, apply their merits to my soul, make me willing to follow Thee on every occasion, to share in the sufferings of Thy Passion, and to drink with Thee the bitterness of Thy chalice, so that, watered with Thy tears and Thy blood, I may be purified of my sins, and with the help of Thy grace I may reach the abode of glory. Amen.
