Litany of
Our Suffering Lord

Our divine Saviour wanted to give us an example of the most perfect resignation, because it is the most loving, in the midst of the sufferings that visit every man. Jesus Christ! Here is the man of sorrow par excellence! His divine Mother Mary, the undefiled Virgin, also drank the chalice of sorrow to the dregs; let us therefore hasten to stand with Her at the foot of the Cross of the dying Jesus, and to honor these mysteries of ignominy and suffering which should sanctify us and show us the only road to eternal happiness.

Lord, have mercy on us.

Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us.

Christ, hear us.
Christ, graciously hear us.

  • God the Father of Heaven,
    have mercy on us.
  • God the Son, Redeemer of the world,
    have mercy on us.
  • God the Holy Ghost,
    have mercy on us.
  • Holy Trinity, One God,
    have mercy on us.

  • O Jesus, man of sorrows par excellence,
Help us to carry our cross as You carried Yours.
  • O Jesus, poor and deprived of everything,
    Help us to carry...
  • O Jesus, disowned and rejected by Your people,
  • O Jesus, scorned and covered with opprobrium,
  • O Jesus, hated and persecuted,
  • O Jesus, abandoned, denied and betrayed by Your own disciples,
  • O Jesus, saddened to the point of death,
  • O Jesus, given over to disgust, weariness and dejection,
  • O Jesus, sold for money like a slave,
  • O Jesus, bound and garroted like a notorious thief,
  • O Jesus, led in infamy before the courts and judges of the earth,
  • O Jesus, dragged in disgrace through all the streets of Jerusalem,
  • O Jesus, exposed to the shouting and booing of the populace,
  • O Jesus, slandered and unjustly judged,
  • O Jesus, treated as a madman and a fool,
  • O Jesus, scourged and covered in blood,
  • O Jesus, condemned to death as a criminal and a villain,
  • O Jesus, compared to an infamous thief,
  • O Jesus, crowned with thorns and greeted with derision,
  • O Jesus, burdened with the anathemas and curses of all the people,
  • O Jesus, led to Calvary and bearing the burden of the Cross,
  • O Jesus, tied to this Cross and presented as a spectacle to the whole world,
  • O Jesus, quenched with bitterness and gall in the ardor of Thy thirst,
  • O Jesus, whose Heart was pierced by a lance,
  • O Jesus, expiring at last in the arms of the Cross,
  • O Jesus, willing victim for all our sins,
  • O Jesus, model and sustainer of all our sorrows,

  • Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world,
    spare us, O Lord.
  • Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world,
    graciously hear us, O Lord.
  • Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world,
    have mercy on us.

Let Us Pray. – O Jesus, who for love of me, and for the expiation of my sins, suffered an infinite number of pains, humiliations and opprobrium, imprint them with a deep esteem in my mind, engrave their sentiments in my heart, apply their merits to my soul, make me willing to follow Thee on every occasion, to share in the sufferings of Thy Passion, and to drink with Thee the bitterness of Thy chalice, so that, sprinkled with Thy tears and Thy blood, I may be purified of my sins, and by the help of Thy grace I may reach the abode of glory. Amen.
